چکیده

Some glaciers in Greenland are currently showing dramatic changes: A fast retreat of the glacier front, thinning and acceleration of glacier movement. As a prominent example, Jacobshavn Isbræ glacier has accelerated from 20 meters per day to 40 meters per day within a few years. These effects can very well be observed by photogrammetric and remote sensing techniques. In the paper, we report on recent measurements at three glaciers in West Greenland: Jacobshavn Isbræ, Eqip Sermia and Støre Qarajaq. The paper will concentrate on the determination of spatio-temporal velocity fields from high resolution terrestrial image sequences captured by a 39Megapixel camera. In addition, the glacier front retreat has been mapped from multi-temporal satellite images, and a terrestrial laserscanner has been used to determine glacier surface models and glacier motion from multiple scans. The results of the photogrammetric measurements form a valuable basis for glaciological research on the changing behavior of glaciers.

Glacier Velocity Determination from Multi Temporal Terrestrial Long Range Laser Scanner Point Clouds

Research on the motion behaviour of arctic glaciers provides important information about the influence of global temperature changes on the climate system and especially the global sea level rise. In the past years dramatic changes could be observed for some of the Greenland outlet glaciers. Jacobshavn Isbrae is one of the fastest and most productive glaciers in Greenland and is therefore an in...

Analysis of the Motion Behaviour of Jakobshavn Isbræ Glacier in Greenland by Monocular Image Sequence Analysis

Jakobshavn Isbræ on the west coast of Greenland is one of the fastest and most productive glaciers in the world. It has been moving with an average velocity of 20 meters per day over a long time, producing to total annual iceberg volume of 30 40 km. In recent years a dramatic retreat of the glacier front has been observed. At the same time, a significant increase of the moving velocity has been...

Instruments and Methods Glacier velocities from time-lapse photos: technique development and first results from the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) in Greenland

Automated digital cameras were installed in May–June 2007 beside major West Greenland marine-terminating glaciers as part of the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS). EIS cameras began imaging the lowest 4 km of the glacier at hourly intervals throughout sunlit periods of the year. This study presents the development of techniques for quantifying glacier velocity from a single camera perspective. A Multi-I...

Acquisition of a 3 min, two-dimensional glacier velocity field with terrestrial radar interferometry

Outlet glaciers undergo rapid spatial and temporal changes in flow velocity during calving events. Observing such changes requires both high temporal and high spatial resolution methods, something now possible with terrestrial radar interferometry. While a single such radar provides line-of-sight velocity, two radars define both components of the horizontal flow field. To assess the feasibility...

Sub-decadal variations in outlet glacier terminus positions in Victoria

Recent work has highlighted the sensitivity of marine-terminating glaciers to decadal-scale changes in the ocean–climate system in parts of East Antarctica. However, compared to Greenland, West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula, little is known about recent glacier change and potential cause(s), with several regions yet to be studied in detail. In this paper, we map the terminus positions ...
